Domains of English

English is used in many different situations, for many different purposes, and by many different people. And the English used will be a little bit different in each situation.

For example, American English is a little different from British English. Business men speak differently from students. A speaker telling funning stories to a friend speaks differently from a professor giving a lecture.

These are different domains of English. At The English Listening Lounge we provide English from a number of different domains. These are the ones that are currently planned, although not all are available yet.

American English

This is the English spoken by ordinary, educated, native speakers from the United States. We try to provide a variety of speakers, some young and some older. They are talking about general everyday topics.

British English

This is the English spoken in Britain. There is more variation between speakers in Britain than in the United States--especially the accent. Again we try to get a variety of native speaker, of different ages and different social classes. They are talking about general everyday topics.

International English

Many people use English for international communication, and it is important to listen to other nonnative speakers. People from different countries often have strong accents. We have a variety of speakers, who all speak good English. They are talking about general everyday topics.

Academic English

Many people study English so that they can attend an English speaking university. We have different speakers--American, British, and international-- talking on academic topics. These are of four types:

  • Education:- speakers talking about education in general.

  • University Life:- speakers talking about university life.

  • Presentations:- students making typical classroom presentations on different topics, from different disciplines. No specialized knowledge is necessary to understand these.

  • Mini-lectures:- lecturers giving short lectures on serious academic topics, from different disciplines. No specialized knowledge is necessary to understand these.

Business English

English is the language of international business, and there are a number of specialized topics business people talk about. We have many different speakers--American, British, and international-- speaking on the following topics.

  • marketing

  • finance

  • customer service

Narratives

Stories are an important use of language, and many people think the language used in stories is a little different from that used in other situations. So we have brought together a collection of stories.

  • interesting events:- ordinary people talking about some incident in their lives

  • folk tales:- from around the world.

  • fairy stories:- traditional fairy stories English and American fairy stories.
