Study Guide

Learn how to study English using the English Listening Lounge. It's really easy. First, filter the passages. Second, select a passage. Then, click on the title. After that, just listen. That's all!

We have more details below:

Choose a Listener Level

The passages are filterable by using the drop-down menus. The menu levels are:

  • New Listener level contains easy listening passages. If you are new to English listening then start here.

  • Regular Listener level contains intermediate listening passages. If you are used to English listening then try here.

  • Advanced Listener level contains more advanced listening passages. If you want challenging, serious, or educated English, then study here.

Choose a Passage

Each level has many listening passages. These are grouped in topics, such as family, food, travel, music, and so on. Each passage has a short description of the content. Just choose any passage you like. For more information:

Listening

When you choose a passage title from the menu, the passage will be displayed to the right.

  • The top of the listening page has the name of the passage, a short description of the contents, and some details about the passage. To listen, click on the mp3 players play button.

  • When you listen, the mp3 player will appear beside the speakers picture. You can use that just like an ordinary home audio player: you can play, pause, seek, go back, go forward, or play it again.

  • The bottom of the listening page has some study aids. They may help you understand the passage.

After Listening

After listening, you have a number of choices. You can:

  • Choose another passage

  • Use one of the Study Aids.

Study Aids

Working with these may help you to understand the passage better. But only use them if you like to use them.

  • Read the written transcript--the speakers words.

  • Read the questions.

  • Read our answers to the questions (other answers maybe ok).

Listen to More Passages

Listen to many different passages. Choose different speakers, different accents, and different topics. And just try to understand what the speaker means.

If you think a passage is too difficult, try listening to it again. Or read the transcript. If you don't understand, don't worry. Just choose a different passage. We have hundreds of passages.

There are two things you must do:

  • listen to lots of different passages--relax, and just enjoy listening.

  • Try to understand what the speaker is saying.

The Secret of Success

It takes a lot of time and hard work to learn a language. We try to make listening interesting. But to be successful you must:

  • study often, and

  • try hard.

Study hard, but enjoy it. This is the secret of success.
